Planning the Trip
I’ve always associated Cambodia with temples, island beaches, and that slightly chaotic charm you only really understand once you’ve been there. But when I started planning a recent trip—splitting time between Phnom Penh and Koh Rong—I realised there was something I hadn’t properly thought about before:
How your skin actually handles that kind of environment.
Heat, humidity, saltwater, and constant sun exposure change everything—from how your skin behaves to how you manage things like shaving, irritation, and overall maintenance.
It turns out, preparing for a beach holiday in Southeast Asia isn’t just about packing sunscreen. There’s a bit more to it.
First Impressions: Heat, Humidity & Skin Changes
Landing in Phnom Penh, the first thing you notice is the heat—it’s intense, but it’s the humidity that really affects your skin.

Within a couple of days:
- Skin feels oilier
- Sweat becomes constant
- Shaving becomes more frequent (and more irritating)
Even small things—like razor burn or ingrown hairs—start to feel amplified in that kind of climate.
And once you’re out in the sun daily, your skin becomes more reactive than you might expect.
Hair Removal Before a Beach Holiday: What Actually Works?
Before travelling, most people default to the usual options:
- Shaving
- Waxing
- Hair removal creams
They work—but only short term.
The issue is consistency. In a hot climate, hair regrowth combined with sweat and friction can lead to irritation, particularly in areas like the legs, underarms, and bikini line.
That’s where longer-term options start to come into the conversation.
Laser hair removal, for example, works by targeting pigment (melanin) within the hair follicle using light energy, which helps reduce future growth over time.
But importantly—it’s not a one-off treatment.
Most people require multiple sessions spaced weeks apart, as hair grows in different cycles and only certain hairs can be targeted at any one time.

Why Timing Matters (Especially Before Cambodia)
One thing I hadn’t fully appreciated before travelling is how much sun exposure affects treatments.
Laser-based treatments and sun exposure don’t mix particularly well. When your skin is tanned, melanin levels increase, which can interfere with how the laser targets the hair and increase the risk of irritation or pigmentation issues.
Because of this:
- Treatments are usually planned weeks in advance of travel
- Sun exposure is limited before and after sessions
- Consistency matters more than last-minute fixes
It’s one of those things that only really makes sense once you understand how the process works.
Koh Rong: The Reality of Beach Life
Arriving in Koh Rong, everything slows down.
White sand, clear water, no real schedule—just long days in the sun.

But from a skin perspective:
- You’re exposed to UV constantly
- Saltwater dries the skin
- Shaving becomes more frequent (and more irritating)
This is where the difference between short-term fixes vs long-term planning really becomes obvious.
You can manage it—but it’s not always ideal.
The Bigger Realisation: Travel vs Long-Term Maintenance
After a few weeks, it became clear that while travel is great for a reset, it’s not the best environment for maintaining consistent treatments.
Anything that requires:
- Multiple sessions
- Controlled conditions
- Follow-up care
…is always going to be more practical when done properly, in a structured setting.
Laser hair removal is a good example of this. Because it’s delivered over a course of treatments, typically spaced several weeks apart, it’s something most people start and maintain closer to home rather than trying to fit around travel.
Heading Home to the UK—and Thinking About Long-Term Results
Coming back home to the UK, the focus shifts slightly. Instead of short-term fixes, it becomes more about consistency, skin health, and long-term results.
While treatments like laser hair removal can be appealing before a beach holiday, the reality is that they require proper planning, multiple sessions, and ongoing assessment to achieve the best results.
Rather than trying to manage that around travel, it makes more sense to approach it within a regulated clinical setting. For me, being based in Kilmarnock, that meant returning to places I trust—laser hair removal at Clinic 22 is carried out as part of a consultation-led treatment plan designed to be completed over time, rather than treated as a one-off solution.
Final Thoughts
Cambodia is incredible—there’s no doubt about that.
But it also highlights something most people don’t think about:
Your environment has a huge impact on your skin.
- Heat and humidity change how your skin behaves
- Sun exposure affects treatment options
- Short-term fixes only go so far
And if you’re thinking ahead—especially before a beach holiday—planning properly makes a big difference. Because when everything is taken care of in advance, you can actually relax when you get there.
