The simplest way to get from Krabi Airport (KBV) to Ao Nang is a direct taxi or pre-booked private transfer. It is normally the best choice for families, groups, late arrivals, travellers with several bags, or anyone who wants to reach their hotel without waiting for other passengers. A shared airport minivan can cost less and is useful for solo travellers travelling light, but it may wait for passengers and make several hotel drop-offs.
Ao Nang is west of Krabi Town, not beside the airport. Allow roughly 40 to 60 minutes from the airport to an Ao Nang hotel once you are on the road; shared transport can take longer. Check your hotel address carefully before booking: Noppharat Thara, Klong Muang, Tubkaek, Ao Nam Mao, Krabi Town, and Railay are all different destinations with different transfer arrangements.
| Option | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Shared minivan | Solo travellers and light luggage | Lower-cost, hotel-area drop-off, but possible waiting and multiple stops. |
| Airport taxi | Convenience without pre-booking | Direct road transfer arranged after landing; confirm the exact hotel and fare before leaving. |
| Pre-booked private transfer | Families, groups, late flights, bulky luggage | Meet-and-transfer service with a confirmed vehicle, destination, and luggage space. |
| Ride-hailing app | Travellers with mobile data and a flexible plan | Can be useful if a driver accepts the trip, but do not make it your only late-night plan. |
What happens after you land at Krabi Airport?
After baggage reclaim and customs, if applicable, arrange transport before heading out to the kerb. Private taxis, shared minivans, and transport desks may be available for arriving passengers, but vehicles, prices, payment methods, and departure arrangements can change. Check the current options at the airport and use an authorised or clearly identified transport desk rather than agreeing to an unclear offer in the arrivals area.
Tell the driver or desk your hotel name and area, not simply “Ao Nang”. Some properties are on hillside roads, near Noppharat Thara, or beyond the central beachfront strip. Ask whether the quoted transfer is door-to-door, whether it is private or shared, and whether there is room for all your luggage.
Shared shuttle or minivan: best for budget-conscious arrivals
A shared minivan is usually the practical low-cost option from KBV to central Ao Nang. It is most suitable when you are travelling alone or as a couple with manageable bags and do not mind a less predictable door-to-door journey.
The important trade-off is time. A shared vehicle may wait until there are enough passengers, then drop people at several hotels. The road journey itself is not especially long, but the full transfer can take noticeably longer than a private car. It is therefore a poor choice if you have a restaurant booking, a boat connection, young children who need to get settled, or a late check-in at a remote property.
Before buying a ticket, confirm all of the following:
- that the service is going to Ao Nang, rather than only Krabi Town;
- whether it drops at your specific hotel or at a central point;
- the expected waiting time before departure;
- how much luggage is included; and
- how payment is accepted.
Do not assume that a public airport bus to Krabi Town continues to Ao Nang. Krabi Town and Ao Nang are separate destinations, and an onward taxi from town can remove much of the saving.
Airport taxi: the easiest option to arrange on arrival
An airport taxi is the straightforward choice if you want to decide after landing but still travel directly to your hotel. Use an authorised or clearly identified airport transport counter, confirm the displayed or agreed fare before paying, and keep any receipt or transfer voucher until you arrive.
This option is particularly worthwhile if there are two or more of you, as the difference from separate shared-minivan tickets can become less significant once convenience, luggage, and hotel stops are considered. It also avoids the uncertainty of app-driver availability after a flight arrives.
Ask for the vehicle size before committing. A standard car may be fine for two people with soft bags, but four adults, a pushchair, diving gear, or several large cases may need a larger vehicle. If a child seat matters, arrange it in advance rather than expecting one to be available at the airport.
Pre-booked private transfer: best for families, groups, and late flights
A pre-booked transfer is the lowest-stress option when the details matter. Your accommodation may be able to arrange one, or you can use a reputable transfer provider that confirms the pickup procedure in writing. Give the provider your flight number, arrival date, lead passenger name, accommodation name, passenger total, and realistic luggage count.
For a late arrival, ask what happens if the flight is delayed. A useful confirmation should state whether the driver monitors flight changes, where the meeting point is, how long the driver will wait, and how to contact them if your baggage is delayed or your phone has no signal.
Pre-booking is especially sensible for:
- families travelling with children, pushchairs, or car-seat requirements;
- groups who need a van rather than separate cars;
- travellers arriving after the usual daytime flow of shared transfers;
- hotels north of Ao Nang, including Klong Muang and Tubkaek;
- travellers carrying large suitcases, sports equipment, or fragile items; and
- anyone continuing to a time-sensitive onward connection.
Can you use Grab or another ride-hailing app?
Ride-hailing can be useful in Krabi, but availability is not guaranteed when you land, particularly when flights arrive late, demand is high, or there are few nearby drivers. Treat it as an option to compare rather than a dependable substitute for a confirmed transfer.
Download the app, add a payment method or carry enough cash before travelling, and follow the pickup instructions shown in the app. If you are arriving late, have children, or cannot comfortably wait outside with bags, arrange a hotel transfer or private car instead.
Late arrivals: plan for the road transfer, not just the flight
Late arrivals at KBV are usually manageable if your final destination is Ao Nang, but pre-booking removes the main uncertainty. Shared transport can be more limited later in the evening, and an app-based car may not appear immediately. Send your hotel your flight details in advance and ask whether it can arrange a transfer or recommend a reliable pickup plan.
Railay requires more care. It has no road access, so an airport taxi or minivan only takes you as far as a mainland boat departure point. The final journey is by longtail boat, and beach boarding, darkness, weather, luggage, and the hotel’s check-in arrangements can all complicate a late arrival. Unless your Railay hotel has given you a confirmed late-arrival transfer plan, staying the first night in Ao Nang is often the more practical decision. Read our Ao Nang to Railay Beach guide before committing to a same-evening crossing.
Luggage, children, and onward boats
For most Ao Nang hotels, a car or minivan can deliver you close to reception, but the last few minutes may still involve steps, slopes, or narrow access roads. Send the property a message if you have limited mobility, a wheelchair, a pushchair, or unusually heavy luggage.
Do not book an onward island boat solely around your scheduled landing time. Flight delays, baggage reclaim, road traffic, and transfer waiting time can quickly use up the margin. This is particularly important if you are heading to Railay, Koh Lanta, Koh Jum, or Phi Phi. If an onward boat is essential, leave a generous buffer or plan an overnight in Ao Nang or Krabi Town first.
Ao Nang is generally the most convenient mainland base for travellers who want access to Railay and island trips. Our Krabi and Ao Nang travel guide explains how it compares with Krabi Town, Railay, Noppharat Thara, Klong Muang, and Tubkaek.
The key point
Choose a shared minivan if keeping costs down matters more than speed and you are happy with a possible wait. Choose an airport taxi if you want a direct transfer without arranging it in advance. For late flights, children, lots of luggage, a remote hotel, or any onward boat connection, book a private transfer or hotel pickup before you fly. Above all, confirm the exact hotel area: “Krabi”, “Ao Nang”, and “Railay” are not interchangeable destinations.
