A woman having a massage overlooking the ocean in Cambodia

When I first booked my trip to Cambodia, I imagined temples, beaches, and maybe a few cocktails at sunset. What I didn’t expect was how deeply the trip would affect my approach to health and wellbeing. Cambodia has this calm energy about it—chaotic in some places, yes—but underneath it all, a kind of stillness that gently encourages you to slow down, breathe deeper, and look inward a bit.

The Wellness Scene in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh

I started in Siem Reap, spending my mornings watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat and my afternoons at a wellness retreat tucked away behind a lotus pond. There, I fell into a rhythm of slow yoga, herbal teas, and traditional Khmer massages that seemed to last forever (in the best possible way). The pace was addictive—restful, unhurried, and incredibly restorative.

Later, in Phnom Penh, I tried out a slightly more modern wellness centre that offered acupuncture, detox programs, and a surprisingly good guided meditation session led by a French expat who’d lived in Cambodia for over a decade. I left feeling lighter—mentally and physically. There was something about stepping away from the usual routines that gave me space to really think about how I treat my body back home.

Beachfront Recharging on Koh Rong

No Cambodian trip would be complete without the coast, so I made my way down to Koh Rong, which felt like hitting pause on everything. No traffic, no emails—just hammock naps, beach swims, and the occasional massage under a wooden pavilion overlooking the ocean. It was the kind of simplicity that resets you without you even realising it’s happening.

While Koh Rong doesn’t have the full-blown wellness facilities you’ll find in the cities, it doesn’t need them. Just being there feels like therapy. That said, I did stumble on a luxury beach spa offering Ayurvedic facials and reflexology, which felt like a nice bridge between rustic island life and intentional self-care.

A Shift in Perspective – Embracing Simpler Therapies

Coming back to the UK, I found myself wanting to hold on to that feeling—not just the tan or the holiday high, but the sense of balance I’d tapped into while away. I’ve started prioritising little things: stretching in the morning, drinking more water, even walking instead of driving when I can.

It’s also made me more open to integrating different forms of wellness into daily life—things I might’ve brushed off before. I recently came across some fascinating research around light-based therapies, like low-level laser therapy, which support healing without the need for drugs or downtime. It’s not the sort of thing I would’ve thought twice about before this trip, but Cambodia kind of reprogrammed how I think about looking after myself—less fixing, more supporting the body to do what it already knows how to do.

Still Glowing, Just Colder Now

It’s strange how a place can leave such a mark. Cambodia gave me much more than I expected: a tan, sure—but also a deeper appreciation for the slower things. For being kind to your body. For exploring wellness not as a luxury, but as something you actively choose to weave into your life, bit by bit.

If you’re ever lucky enough to go, take your time. Skip the rushed itineraries. Lie still. Let the place work its quiet magic. And when you get back home—wherever that may be—keep that thread going. Even if it’s just with a good cup of tea, a deep breath, or exploring something new that helps your body feel its best.
